How to Wear a Flannel Shirt with Leggings: 3 Flannel Shirt Outfits
It’s that time of year again – the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here! It is a great time to prep your wardrobe for the upcoming fall season. You can always count on finding fall staples marked down ahead of the season during the Anniversary Sale. This year is no exception. Things tend to sell out during this sale, but a couple of items that still seem to still be in stock are two absolute fall must-haves: the Spanx faux leather leggings and a flannel shirt. There are a ton of ways you can wear these pieces separately. Since they are both included in the sale, I thought that I would share how to wear a flannel shirt with leggings.

The fall season is such a fun season to dress for. Although, the transitional weather can sometimes make it challenging to know what to wear. If you prep your wardrobe with staple pieces, your outfits will come together effortlessly. Two essential pieces that every woman should have in her fall fashion repertoire are a good pair of leggings and a flannel shirt. The good news is that both of those things are currently included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! Using the two sale pieces, I’m sharing 3 flannel shirt outfits with faux leather leggings.
In this post you will see how to wear a flannel shirt with leggings for fall.
FLANNEL SHIRT OUTFITS
Flannel Shirt with Leggings and Lug Sole Combat Boots
Rarely does the climate go from shorts season to sweater season instantaneously. Most of the time there is a gradual decrease in temperatures. Here in Wisconsin, the downhill climb usually starts at the end of August or beginning of September and it can take until the end of October some years for it to really start to feel like fall. This outfit is perfect for that month or two of in-between weather where it’s too cool to call the season summer, but too warm to call the season fall.
This flannel has a high low cut, but there is plenty of length in it – even in the shorter front panel. You can still totally get away with wearing it on its own with leggings. Popping it over a bralette gives you the opportunity to open or close the buttons on the flannel as the temperatures permit. Finishing the look with a pair of lug sole combat boots gives it an edginess without sacrificing comfort.
Winter Flannel Shirt Outfit
This plaid top is fairly lightweight, so once the frigid winter temps roll in, it might not give you enough warmth when worn on its own. One of the easiest ways to carry the shirt further into the season is to layer a chunky cardigan over it. This cardigan is an Amazon find and has been worth every penny, in my personal opinion. I did size up to a large in the cardigan because I wanted a nice chunky and oversized fit. I ordered the light khaki color option, which pairs beautifully with the khaki color in the plaid flannel shirt. Throw the flannel top and cardigan combo over a pair of leggings and lug sole boots and you’ll have yourself a cozy, casual outfit that can be worn for a number of occasions.
Cute Flannel Outfit
If this outfit doesn’t scream fall, I don’t know what does! The only thing missing is a PSL in my hand. A couple of the accessories that I paired with the flannel and leggings are also currently marked down. The hat is included in Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale. The mini handbag is a Tory Burch style that came out last year and is marked down, presumably to make room for this year’s styles. The boots that I am wearing here are also a last year style from Sam Edelman. They are still available in select sizes, but I will also link a similar pair. The Anniversary Sale has some very similar styles included that I will link up as well. All together the pieces combine to make one aesthetic flannel outfit!
Alrighty – there you have it! You can combine two fall staples several ways to create some really cute flannel shirt outfits. Whether you’re needing something for those transitional days or wanting to cozy up once the temps have really dropped, you almost certainly can create an effortless fall outfit with a plaid flannel shirt and leggings.
Sizing Info: I am 5’6” with a pear shape and typically wear a size small in tops and a size 4 in jeans. Here I am wearing a size medium in the flannel shirt. I am wearing a size small in the Spanx faux leather leggings.
