Is it just me, or is August such a bittersweet time of the year? Summer is starting to wind down and there is a chill that is starting to return in the air – especially after the sun goes down. While we are nowhere near sweater weather yet, it is definitely around this time when I find myself starting to think about how I will be transitioning my wardrobe from summer to fall. It’s also around this time of the year when I always find myself reaching for a cute kimono. Kimonos are an awesome lightweight layering piece that you can wear from summer all the way into fall.
In this post I am sharing 7 kimono outfit ideas.
Kimono Outfits
Kimono Festival Outfits
Here is an outfit formula that you can’t go wrong with on summer days: jean shorts, a tank top, and a kimono. The only difference between these two outfits is the cut and color of the tank tops and the shoes and accessories that complete the looks. Both of these looks can be worn right now while the summer temps are still here. Both would also make great kimono festival outfits. If you’re headed to a country festival, opt for the boots. If not, and the temps allow for it, go with the sandals. Either way, both of these looks make great end of summer outfits.
Kimono Outfit Ideas With Jeans
Once the temps cool off a bit, switch out the shorts for a pair of jeans. As you can see here, you can pair a kimono with just about any style of jeans. A kimono looks just as good with a pair of flare jeans as it does with a pair of wide leg jeans or skinny jeans. To save yourself some money, use whatever jeans you already have in your closet to create an adorable kimono outfit!
Kimono and Dress Outfit
If this is not the quintessential fall transition look, I’m not quite sure what is! From the color of the dress to the booties to the felt hat, this boho kimono outfit screams fall. At the same time, it can be worn well before the temps decide to drop. The nice thing about a kimono dress outfit is that it can totally be styled casually or more elegantly based on the shoes and accessories you decide to pair with it. Obviously I styled it more casually here, but remove the hat and switch out the booties for a pair or dressy heels and you’ll have yourself a cute outfit for date night or a GNO.
How to Wear a Kimono to Work
Last, but not least, I wanted to share a kimono work outfit. Even though this particular kimono contains bold colors and a lively print, you can still get away with wearing it to the office. Simply layer it over a dressy camisole and work slacks. I happened to own a pair of dress pants in a color that flowed perfectly with the vivid colors in the kimono. The best part is that both the pants and the kimono are both from Amazon. Which means they are both affordable and ship on Prime!
Since we are on the topic, if you are a corporate girl in need of office outfit inspiration, I recently shared a blog post all about cute outfits for work. Check it out here. I work from home, which means that I work in my pajamas most days. I don’t really have a reason to wear business casual attire. If you like the outfits that I share and would like to see more work wardrobe inspo, leave a comment on any of these blog posts and let me know! I’d love to share more, but only if I have reason to.
Are Kimonos Still in Style in 2024?
As you can see by all the ways that I am wearing this long kimono, of course kimonos are still in style in 2024! The key to keeping a kimono relevant, even if you’ve had it a few years, is to pair it with pieces that you are currently loving today. A few years ago, we might have layered a kimono over skinny jeans. To update the look and keep with current trends, opt for flare jeans or looser fitting jeans.
This concept is not limited to kimonos. If you have a piece in your closet that you’ve owned for a while, but still love, of course you can continue to wear it in 2024 and beyond! The ultimate goal of dressing well is to improve your mood and confidence level. One of the best ways to get there is to wear pieces that you love. How we wear pieces might change from year to year, but that doesn’t mean the piece itself has to become obsolete.
Here’s to dressing in whatever it is that brings us joy and confidence!
